Artist Brian Dettmer is nicknamed “the book surgeon” because of his ability to turn books and other antiquated media into detailed, innovative sculptures.
He uses knives, tweezers, and other surgical tools to carve each page one at a time, revealing images and ideas. Nothing is added or relocated, only removed. Sentences and images are revealed to expose alternate memories and histories. Dettmer’s work is a collaboration with past authors and creators. Each finished piece reveals a new relationship of the book’s interior elements exactly where they have been all along.
